But there is often much more value in the information behind those accounts. Understanding profitability, cash flow, costs, margins and financial trends can help business owners make better-informed decisions throughout the year.

Meet Dan
Accountancy should be about more than looking backwards once a year.
I'm Daniel Riley, an MAAT-qualified accountant with over ten years of experience working in accounting and finance.
During that time, I've worked with businesses at very different stages - from sole traders with low levels of turnover through to established limited companies turning over several million pounds.
One thing I've heard far too often from business owners is that they only really hear from their accountant once a year. The financial year ends, the accounts are prepared months later, they're told what tax they need to pay, and that's often the extent of the relationship.
I wanted Puma to offer something different.
I believe the real value comes from understanding what's happening in a business throughout the year, while there's still an opportunity to do something with that information.
That could mean understanding why profits or margins have changed, planning ahead for tax, improving cash flow, considering finance for the next investment, reviewing costs, or simply having someone to talk through a business decision with.
My aim is to partner with clients and understand their businesses properly, rather than simply process their accounts. The better I understand where a business is, where its owners want it to go, and the challenges they're facing, the more useful the support I can provide.
That's also why I named the business Puma Business Services, rather than Puma Accountants. Accountancy and tax are at the heart of what we do, but running a business involves much more than filing accounts. I wanted the name to reflect the wider financial and practical support Puma can provide as a business develops.
Why Puma?
And Puma itself has a personal meaning. I grew up in Buxton and played football for Buxton Pumas FC from the age of six until sixteen. When it came to naming my own business years later, Puma was a nod back to something that had been a big part of my childhood and my connection to the local area.
Ultimately, I want Puma to be the kind of accountant I believe businesses are looking for - someone they can speak to throughout the year, who understands their business and genuinely wants to help them move it forward.
Because filing the accounts should be part of the relationship - not the relationship itself.
